I am a make-up wearing kind a girl. My make-up obsession started when I was a teen in a desperate attempt to cover up my freckles and my naturally rosy red checks. But my first make-up experience was when I told my sister (4 years my senior) that I was heading off on my bike to visit my ‘boy‘ friend, I was all of 12 years old. She shut her bedroom door and announced “you are not going out like that!” She then grabbed her eye liner pencil and proceeded to apply it under my eyes, “OK,” she smiled, “now you’re ready!” I guess that’s what you get from a 16 year old sister. Let’s just say I learnt a lot from her about make-up and boys.
I was always more of a foundation and eye liner girl, not keen on lip gloss, or bright lip sticks. I focused more on my big brown eyes, but over the years lip gloss has become one of my ‘go to‘ items! Another I’ve added to my ‘must have‘ in a make-up bag is blush. For years I avoided blush, I mean seriously why would I need it when I already hated my naturally rosy red cheeks? But with turning 30 comes wisdom ladies, (it’s true), their is a difference between natural annoying red cheeks and a beautifully defined cheek bone due to perfectly applied blusher. (I prefer the creams to the powder).
Let’s face it, there are days that just, well to be blunt ‘suck’! Last Friday for example, I dragged my tired, grumpy, anxious self out of bed (reluctantly) and put on my ‘psyched up face‘ in place of my “psycho face‘, and embraced the day! It took motivation, some mindfulness and a good solid dose of ‘positive attitude’! (It turned out it was totally worth the effort, click here to see why). But as much as I believe we shouldn’t put on a false mask and hide ourselves, sometimes a bright lipstick can give us that little push to get us out the door!
I am an advocate for positivity, for showing up in our lives and being ourselves. I don’t believe we should hide who we are, and I love my freckles now! I believe if we hide behind a mask we miss out on learning the best about ourselves and close ourselves off to amazing life experiences. We are all so much more alike than we realise, we all have ‘bad’ days, ‘psycho‘ days, ‘sad‘ days, and ‘not want to face the world‘ kind of days. It’s OK to admit that! Sometimes it takes one person to say ‘I am struggling with the kids today’, ‘I need help’, or ‘my boss is driving me crazy’, to realise we all go through the same crap. Just like some days are amazing, or unexpectedly hilarious! And you know what, if it takes a bit of bright red lip stick to help us fake it ’til we make it some days then I say put that lip stick on and rock it! Just remember if things get too much, it is OK to put your hand up and say “I need help!’
Let your inner beauty shine through always, Thanks for joining me, love Mackenzie xx

I’m a freckle face, I have/had a love hate with my freckles. I remember being SO excited for the book Freckle Juice, I wanted to read through as fast as I could for the recipe. 😀
Thankfully, I married a man who absolutely adores my freckles. He doesn’t understand why I cover them up.
I HATED blush! My mom would always try to put blush on me for proms and dances, which usually caused an argument. “Mom, I’m not 30.” 😀
Well, I’m now in my thirties and I can appreciate a good blush.
I agree we should NOT hide who we are. Being present in ourselves is the most beautiful reality. I’m loving my reality, it took me some time, but I’m here. I do put a mask on occasionally, but that’s usually when I have my cape on… super mommy! 🙂
Thanks for joining us #TWSS
XOXO
Hi Super mommy! Love it! Yes lets embrace our freckles together, thanks for your gorgeous comment it made my day!
Thank you for joining Mrs. AOK and I for this weeks That’s What She Said Link Up. I love this … “advocate for positivity, for showing up in our lives and being ourselves.” Those are some powerful and truthful words, that I couldn’t agree more with. So well said!! Life can be hard and it will continue to be hard, and that’s ok. If we are positive and stay true to who we are, we will rock this things called life. PS: I have never tried cream blush before but now I am intrigued. I am a sucker for a pink, rosy blush!
me too I love a rosy pink blush, yes I love the cream, give it a go and let me know what you think xx
Love this, such a positive post. I was always an eyeliner girl – thick black rimmed eyes for most of my teens and early twenties were my ‘look’ I guess. I never left the house without my makeup on, it gave me that little extra bit of a confidence boost I always thought I needed and although these days that extra boost is nice I’m so much more comfortable in my own skin to ‘need’ the mask anymore – although I do worry I might scare small children when I rock up to nursery without makeup on in the mornings ha ha!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, glad you have been able to shed the mask and I am sure you don’t scare anyone lol. You shine!
I like your story about your sister doing your makeup 🙂 I always wanted an older sister, but I’m the eldest! I’m kinda looking forward to 30 and I also like experimenting with blush. It’s great that you mentioned we all have things in common, having bad days is one of those things!
thanks Lexi, embrace 30! You will love being in your 30’s it is a time for self discovery, and letting go of old hang ups!
