I am in love. Yes I admit it, it isn’t just a passing phase, or some quick fling. It is far more than a crush. This has been developing for many years, and I am not alone, no not at all. In fact nearly everyone I know has the same deep feelings, even my hubby. We talk about it several times a day and we have to hold it and taste it at least twice a day. I am in love with coffee. Yes I am! I am not ashamed to say that it has found its way into my heart and become one of my greatest desires. I have to have it! In a recent post I confessed my love of tea, but I am equally in love with coffee and I couldn’t write a post on tea and neglect to mention my other love could I?
What is it about coffee that makes it so deliciously irresistible? For me there are several reasons I love coffee, so today I dedicate this post to all you coffee lovers out there and I will list the reasons why I love coffee.
1. I need it! I consider myself fairly disciplined, I don’t have my first coffee until between 10 am or 11 am. So that means I have to get through waking up way too early for my personal body clock (I am a night owl, but with 3 kids who have to get to school, I have no choice but to drag my tired butt out of bed). I then have to wake up the kids who usually tell me they don’t feel well, or it’s too cold to get out of bed, blah, blah, blah, any excuse to stay in bed a little longer (I wish). Then there is the dreaded hour of forcing them to eat and get dressed, whilst trying to feed 5 chickens, 2 dogs and 3 kittens. This is followed by the half an hour school run. Finally they’re at school and now I have another 30 minute drive home. Get some work done and I am just hanging for that sweet, sweet taste of coffee! Yes I need it!
2. It’s my sacred moment. Having coffee is almost like an act of meditation, yes it really is that sacred. It is all about having a ‘moment’, a divine moment. The way it smells, the feel of my favourite mug in my hands, the warmth against my fingers as I curl them around the mug and breathe in the delicious aroma. As I place it to my lips I am already imaging the taste and then the warm liquid enters my lips, and yes it is heaven, it is perfection. I take that first sip and feel my whole body relax, tension leaves me, it is pure relief. I have waited all morning for this moment and it was worth it.
3. It’s social. Meeting up for coffee with my girlfriends is a great way to catch up. A group of us try and catch up once a week at our local coffee hangout. We order coffees and just sit around and chat. We laugh together, we vent to one another, we even cry together at times. Sitting together, coffee in hand, is a great way to catch up on all the latest gossip.
4. It’s a great way to welcome people and make them feel at home in my home. When someone comes over the first thing I do, (besides panic about my messy house) is offer them a coffee. I love it when they say yes because it makes me feel like I am welcoming them into my home. We head to the kitchen and chat whilst I make us a drink, then we head to the couch where we can relax and chat. I like serving others, it makes me feel like I am telling them I care.
5. When faced with the elements it’s a life saver. Living in Victoria and up in the hills it can get really, really cold over winter, oh who I’m I kidding it’s cold for at least 7 months of the year where I live! But I refuse to always hide away in doors. I embrace the cold weather and to help me I have my (not so) secret weapon, hot coffee! When you are out and about exposed to the elements a hot coffee can make any day bearable.
6. It stops me murdering my kids. OK so this might be a little extreme, (I promise I really don’t want to kill my kids), but there are times that they drive me absolutely mad, crazy, insane, (well you get the idea). Although caffeine is known as a pick me up, it can also be a calmer downer. Sometimes I just really need that ‘me’ time that coffee can give me. I hear the sound of my coffee machine and I can block out the kids noise just for one blissful moment, and as I hug my coffee mug close I can pretend I’m at a little cafe in Italy and that they are someone else’s children, just for a moment.
So yes I love coffee, and these are just some of the reasons why. What about you. are you a coffee lover? What does coffee mean to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for joining me, love Mackenzie xx
Have you had the “TALK” with your kids yet?
