Our home is finally starting to feel more like “our home” now which is so lovely. At first it felt more like we were just away some where, but the more we unpack and the more family and friends that pop in it is starting to feel like we actually are home!
It was stressful leading up to settlement and dealing with everyone involved, but we had some added stress which I haven’t yet blogged about. Right before our home loan was due to be finalised my hubby was made redundant from his position at work. We had known for a long time that this would eventually happen. The company that he worked for are a big American company and were cutting costs wherever they could. They have been closing down offices for years here in Australia and sending their work to countries where they don’t have to pay their workers as much. My hubby was one of the last men standing so we knew he would loose his job one day, but to loose it right before we were due to buy our new home was very stressful for all of us!
In some ways the timing was handy as he was around to unpack and settle into our home, but in other ways it was the worst timing and added to our stress a lot! The last thing you want to do is owe money to a bank and have no income to pay it off, and what I earn is very minimal! We had some savings so we had some time up our sleeves, but with 3 children in private schooling you don’t want to be dipping into savings.
Today my hubby started his new job!!!! He was so lucky to be offered a position by someone he briefly knew from a company he had dealings with through his previous position. He messaged me before with his new desk number and seemed really happy. We were very fortunate with his last job, he worked from home a lot and was very involved with everything the kids did. That will all change a lot now that he has to go in to work, (which is a fair drive) and won’t be home early each day. I also have to re-learn how to cook! (I think my husband is more stressed about what he meal he will come home to every night than he is about his new job, lol)! The kids are probably going to refuse to eat too! I am good at soup though, so it may be vegetable soup every night, lucky the weather is getting cold here! Oh and I am good at cakes too!
I have decided to also get better with budgeting. So that’s my current missions.
- learning to cook fabulous, healthy dinners!
- Become a budgeting queen!
- looking fabulous whilst doing it (OK may be going just a little too far now)
- Bringing my hubby the newspaper and his slippers when he walks through the door to a home smelling of a roast cooking in the oven! (Um yes totally going too far, and SO NOT going to happen, sorry Steve).
OK so I may not be the “perfect wife“, but I am perfectly my quirky, not great at cooking self, and I know that he wouldn’t trade me for the world! I am happy to be me, and to be in our new home, and I am so relieved that my hubby was able to get a new job so quickly. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in living the “perfect life“, having the “perfect home“, but in the end we just need the simple things, LOVE being at the top of that list!
I wrote a post a couple of weeks back about what a home really is, what it should be. A safe haven, a place where there is love, trust, kindness, fun and laughter. Yes we all want a pretty home, and if you are like me and love styling then you want to fill it with wonderful things. But they are just things, possessions, and trust me there is nothing prettier in your home than the feeling of love and the sound of laughter.
I have some beautiful things in my home, I am lucky, but none of them compare to the beauty of our families happiness, my hubby won’t be greeted with slippers, but he will be greeted by a jumping dog, 3 noisy kids, cats and bunnies in the yard and a huge smile and hug from me.
Love to hear from you, so pop by and leave me a comment xx

Hi Mackenzie congrats to hubby on his job! I’m a bit of a budgeting queen well coupon/voucher queen. Hubby started me on it and now I’m addicted xx
thanks, yes I need to become a budgeting queen too!
What a lovely post!! I completely agree that it’s better to have a happy, warm, comfortable home than one filled with beautiful things. My mum always loved the fact that our friends and partners felt so comfortable at our house growing up, I think that’s a sign of a happy home! Even though it was absolutely full of stuff and clutter, as my house now is haha. Glad you are getting settled and that your husband got a new job so quickly. Good luck with the cooking, I sympathise as I am a terrible cook! #bloggerclubuk
This post is lovely, so glad you are settled into your new home! I’m sorry to hear your husband was made redundant at such a crucial time but it sounds like you have all pulled together, congratulations on his new job too. When you’ve mastered the budgeting I could do with some tips!
Great post 🙂

thanks x
it was, but yes I am relieved it all worked out to
A lovely post. You’re right having a home filled with laughter and love is more important than having filled with lovely things, however it is nice when the kids go to bed and I can pack up all the toys and admire my (scruffy) living room in peace. #BloggerClubUK
Ah phew to all – so glad Steve got another job and you are feeling like your new home is home. It’s a lovely feeling. I think bringing the slippers would be a step too far as well…..hehe. Love the last photo and thanks for sharing with #bestandworst x
