When I was a little girl I wanted to grow up and be a mum, I wanted at least 4 kids, but usually I had 6 on my list. I was also going to be a primary school teacher. To me that was what life was all about, growing up, getting married and having children. I could never have imagined even remotely the possibilities that life had to offer!
As a child we see our lives within the limits we are shown. We often want to grow up and be like our parents, or like a favourite aunt, a family friend, or a teacher we look up to, we live in our little world and we don’t realise just how endless our possibilities are. In the late 70’s and 1980’s when I grew up I believe life was more limited compared to how it is for todays’ generation, there was no internet, life was lived mostly in our own backyards.
Now if we are lucky we are shown amazing possibilities as we grow, and we start to believe we can do anything if we dream big enough, and work even harder. Life is ours, we can be anything, we can change the world, we can leave our sparkle wherever we go!
I want my children to believe anything is possible for them, I want them to dream big and work hard. I want them to believe they deserve great things, and that others do too! I want them to know that there are more possibilities in life than I can ever show them or tell them about, and I want them to go out and look for them.
I will do my best to guide them and expose them to the greatest life has to offer, as a parents, aunts, uncles, teachers we owe that to them. I hope I can install and adventurous spirit in them and an open mind. I hope that they will keep some room in their lives for the unimaginable greatness they can discover if they look.
What do you think of this quote by Mary Oliver? I think it is great and I hope that not only will our children leave room for discovering all life has to offer, but that us adults do too!

I love the quote Mackenzie and I also love that as mothers we are encouraging our children, and in particular our daughters, that they are capable of whatever they want to achieve. I also love the fact that today we can have choice – we can be a stay at home mum, we can be a working mum, we can choose to have children or not. Life is about the choices we make. Great post xx
thank you lovely xx
I love this and, it’s funny, because when I first read it I didn’t think about children at all, I thought only about how, as adults, we should keep some room for this. I always think children, whilst only thinking about what they experience in terms of growing up, also have the wildest imaginations which are not constrained by reality. Unfortunately as adults, we grow up and reality creeps in until we keep telling ourselves “we can’t do that”. Great quote, thanks for sharing on #candidcuddles
I love this and your positivity – dream big little ones <3 xx #candidcuddles
yes dream big!
That is true – we know what we are raised knowing. I remember when I moved out to go to college what an eye-opener it was for me to see how different everyone was & all the different backgrounds. Lovely quote – very inspirational! Thanks so much for joining me for #candidcuddles 50!!!
thanks Becky xx
I totally agree – we can be anything we want to be and teaching children to follow their dreams rather than just settle for the first opportunity that comes along is so important. I love the quote too 🙂

I literally just wrote something about this on my site under the ‘teen issues’ page… I completely agree with you! They should absolutely believe the world is their oyster and if they want something we should encourage them to go out there and get it! I can fully relate to this article and think its great! who’s to say they can’t achieve the biggest goals, and get all their hearts desire? I truly hope they do. Love the quote too!
