As you may know I have been trying to work out what to do with my blank canvas of a back yard! I actually received some great, and helpful comments from some of my readers, I loved Katy’s advice
“If you can wait, I would suggest putting off making any big plans until you’ve been in your place a year – that way you can really understand everything that’s in your garden, and get a real sense of what gets the sun at different times of day throughout the year.”
Unfortunately I am not sure I am patient enough, although I totally agree with her advice! I am lucky in one way though that our new home and garden face the exact same way as our last home so I have a good idea of where the sun will be most of the year.
I also loved Jenny’s advice,
“Your children look like they are enjoying it without any planting too, maybe you’ll need to leave some grass to kick a ball around?”
She was referring to these pics
This weekend we got around to assembling our trampoline, finally. The kids have really missed it! I thought I was super woman and started to assemble it whilst wearing no shoes, and as you can imagine I dropped a piece on my foot, right on the bone and it really hurt! Luckily not broken, just very sore now! This sidelined me and I was forced to sit with an elevated foot and an icepack. My parents were over at our home, and mum made me a cup of tea and gave me Maltesers chocolates to ease the pain. (Poor me, lol). I can’t complain it was quite nice sitting in the sun whilst my poor hubby and father were left to assemble it! And if anyone has ever assembled a Springfree Trampoline you will know it is not easy. My six year old son decided to add;
“that’s why you leave it to the men!”
Seriously where did he get that from??? I clearly need to teach him more about how amazing women are!
It is massive though, I guess in our last two homes it didn’t look as big as our yards were huge then! But still the kids were so excited and spent until 7pm out there playing on it! We always find it great in the summertime, the kids put their bathers on and hose each other it is loads of fun.
We also managed to get to the plant nursery and selected a few screening trees that will grow and help give us that intimate feel we want to create. We brought a couple of fruit trees too. It is exciting to make a start, obviously we still need loads of other plants and have lots to think about, but still it is nice to finally have a few trees out there, even if they are mini trees right now.
Any more tips, feel free to share?

Thanks so much , Mackenzie …So happy that you liked my post 🙂
And I love that you are so excited about your garden. I live in an apartment so no yard. But I would love to someday move to a house where I can have my own garden. Fruit trees, flowers, and just some space to maybe put up a swing where I can sit with my cuppa and read. Oh! I would love that. I have no experience of gardening, so I’ll leave that to the experts. I just will wish you luck and lots of greens and colours in your garden!
thank you so much lovely, yes a place to read is on my must do list!
Hi Mackenzie, It is wonderful to be back after a very long blogging break. My book is written though so I am happy. Great to see your pictures and hear about your garden. I think gardening is quite exciting particularly when it is a blank canvas and you can create what you want.
It is so great to have you back, I really enjoyed your post so thank you so much for sharing it xx
Ouch, putting together a trampoline is no easy task. We did it a couple of weeks ago and trying to stretch those coils was horrendous. Unfortunately I’m shocking at gardening so can’t offer any tips 😐

oh I know it is so hard
I love the large open area you have. While growing up we had a huge garden. A swing would be a great idea. I remember spending ours on it – reading and listening to music.
sounds like a lovely memory
Having a yard that allows safe freedom, fun, and joy to your home is fabulous. I am so happy for you all and sure hope that foot gets better quickly. A giant trampoline is great fun for all! If it were us, I think we would place some raised beds and grow some organic veggies. Picking things for dinner is a dream! Enjoy and let the littles have a say too, if they come off the trampoline! #mg xoxo
yes we had a veggie patch in our last two homes and the kids loved being involved. When we planted the trees the other day the girls were obsessed with the worms we found and gave them all names.
I am utterly clueless about gardening although the trampoline would have been my suggestion too!! We are lucky that our garden was established when we bought the house or we would have a blank canvas…forever!! I’m sure you’ll find a way to make it look lovely, the trees will be beautiful! Thanks for hosting #mg
yes there is good and the not so good about a blank canvas. I would love some big trees, but there are none here and the cost too much to buy, so we will wait and watch our little ones grow.
How about some climbers on the fence, you could have lots of flowers at different times of the year and would look very pretty. They also do a pleached crabapple tree that are meant to be stunning. Love the trees they are going to be lovely #marvmondays
oh yes I LOVE your idea! Thanks heaps xx
I quite envy your blank canvas. No pampus grass or sumacs to deal with. Or strange bumps in the grass. I hope you have lots of fun. I love our swing seat. Especially in the evenings, so, if it was me, I’d put one in. Fruit trees would be my other need-to have. Enjoy #MMBC
yes I brought a lovely lemon and also an orange tree to start
Ouch! How’s the foot? Lots of sympathy from me! A fellow sore foot/finger/shoulder sufferer! Our garden definitely has that ‘end of summer’ look, when I’m not sure what I can safely prune and what has to sit and look dead for a while longer. We planted a small apple tree and that has been pretty. Keep it simple is my advice 🙂 Alison x #mg
I like that advice actually, I think simple might be a good fit for me
We don’t have any garden but only balconies. I would love to see some open space in your garden for fun times. Take care.
Thank you lovely, yes lots of fun I think with 3 kids and bunnies hopping around
What an exciting time – I love a blank canvas with so much planting potential and the opportunity to create a space which will enrich the lives of all family members. Sensible to get the trees in first as they will take a while to mature the fruit trees will probably give you the first decent crop in 3-4 years depending on the age of the trees when you bought them and the type of fruit. My apples took 3 years to start, my plum 3 and the greengage 5! We’ve had fruit off the quince tree this year, but I probably should have taken all the fruit off to let the roots establish. No doubt I’ll regret my lack of discipline next year, but this year I’m just looking forward to making a tiny pot of quince jelly!!
oh sounds yummy! Yes I had the same thought to get the trees in early as they need a lot of time to grow
Love your garden – somehow I am imagining an orange tree there, Mac! I have a bunch of little pails that I am contemplating on using, to start a little balcony garden.
And oh, I’ve never been on a trampoline. I’ve seen it in so many movies and imagine jumping high on it. 🙂 Maybe some day!
Your kids do look like they’re having a great time! Have a wonderful week!
Thank you beautiful friend. Yes trampolines are fun! If you ever come to Melbourne come play on mine! I did buy an orange tree too xx
I used to believe that we should only grow things in our garden that weer could eat. However since we had an amazing Portuguese garden with some spectacular flowers I totally appreciate the aesthetics of a few stunning flowers. #mg
Yes flowers are beautiful and great for the bees, and also I love the native birds that come to play when we plant natives here. My last garden was all natives and we had so many amazing birds visit.
We must think alike! We’ve just gone a bought a whole bunch of trees and shrubs too! They are so tiny right now, but I know they’ll be huge in no time! I love your fencing! So modern! We’ve got to get a trampoline for our kids — would you recommend springfree?
Absolutely Jen, the Springfree was the best decision we made.
Looks like you have a good size garden there Mackenzie! Flowers can make such a difference to your garden but I’d suggest maybe growing some organic food? It can help save some pennies at the supermarket! Our girls cousins have a trampoline and my God do the girls love it. Great way to knacker them out before bedtime 🙂 #mg Thanks for hosting!
Nothing beats organic home grown does it!
We don’t have a garden but must be wonderful to have an open space to do what you like. I love a trampoline and sure would be on it a lot 😉 X #mg
It is lovely to have room to enjoy nature
As always, lovely pictures. I would leave it as empty as possible with some trees and a swing and perhaps a bench. But seriously, you didn’t ask for my opinion, did you? 😉
I am always grateful for your opinion lovely xx
I think I agree with the advice about not making big plans regarding your space until you have been in it a year. That allows you and your space to get acquainted with one another. But, I know that’s hard to do sometimes, too. LOL!
it’s true, waiting makes sense. I will make a start and add over the years I guess
I would love to have blank canvas for our garden – we rent and so we’re left with everyone else’s choices! That said, I’m not really good at gardening and wouldn’t know where to begin! xxx #mg
I have never been a gardner, but my parents are great at it, so I may enlist more help
I would love to have a garden, let alone a blank canvas! We are in a flat with questionable people using the community garden so I just don’t feel like it’s a safe area for my daughter. One day we’ll have one though! #marvmondays
as long as you find a lovely park to enjoy then she will always be happy xx
Ouch, I hope your foot is on the mend! I love being outside, its so nice to make the garden a place for all the family to enjoy!
#mg
we had beautiful weather here today and it was so nice to be outside as my son played
I have yet to meet a kid that doesn’t love a trampoline! To be fair I think secretly most adults love them too haha! #MarvMondays
for sure!
I have to agree with her wise words. For us it’s taken ages to really sort this house out. It’s an ongoing project that is evolving as we spend time in it.
Oh my goodness I’m sorry to read that you hurt yourself. I too am a person that just likes to get things done even after an op! #mg
Yes it can be pretty amazing watching things evolve
I think it’s exciting to have a blank canvass of a garden to make your own, We inherited a very established garden, and whilst it’s lovely it hasn’t really worked for us so we’ve been changing it very slowly. Probably would’ve been easier to start from a blank space.
Do leave a little space to grow some veggies, tomatoes, rhubarb, beetroots – all grow very easily!
xx
oh yummy! Must do that!
Oh I love spending time in the garden. And how nice you have a blank canvas to start from. A little veg patch would be great to get the kids involved 🙂 x
Thanks for joining in with #MMBC. Hope to see you next week x
Yes I think a veggie patch will be on the list for sure!
Ohh you’re so lucky to be able to do up your garden however you want it. The trailing sounds like loads of fun! I hope your foot is ok now. Thanks for hosting #mg lovely xx
* trampoline!
Ooh ouch about your foot hope it is feeling better! Quite nice to sit and watch the work for once though 😉 #eatsleepblogrt
Oh how exciting, we rent our house but I dream of the day we own our own so I can have the garden of my dreams. I definitely want some fruit trees like my grandparents had 🙂 thanks for linking up to #SundayBest x
Great post! Your garden looks fab! Hope your toe is getting better. Thanks for linking up to #AnythingGoes
Janet
So sorry, I’m so late with commenting this week. It has just been one of those weeks! I love the trees you’ve chosen so far. Ouch, I squirmed when I read about your foot, still maltesers are good so I’m sure that helped! Thanks for hosting #mg
