My little man and his mother, yes that’s me, managed to get through the first day of school without the world exploding, although there were loads of nerves (from both of us), tears (from him, I actually held it together and went shopping child free), and stress, (again from both of us). Yes we survived. I dreaded it for 5 years, honestly I did. I wasn’t one of those mums saying “I can’t wait until the youngest starts school”, I was on the opposite side of the camp. I tried to hang on to my baby boy as long as humanly possible! If I had the patience for home-schooling he’d probably still be home with me.
The thing is we both got through the first day, followed by the whole first week. We even got through February, March and April and then had a reprieve over Easter where we filled the days with loads of extra hugs, and a few telling off’s (he is 5 after all and I am not super human).
May rolled by and the school routine was becoming more familiar, then June hit and yes school is going really well. My worst fears were he wouldn’t make friends (I know crazy right who wouldn’t want to be friends with this cute face?)
But the truth is he is quite shy, so I was WORRIED. He had gorgeous friends at Kinder, but still I worried that being shy he might be left alone and sad wandering around the playground. He did wander lost for a couple of weeks, following the teacher on yard duty, but finally he found friends to play with, one who hugs him way too much apparently. But he goes off to school (nearly) every day happy, although he prefers sports days!
Where has this year gone, we are half way there. He is not a newbie any more, he has completed a whole half year! I was afraid of him starting and even though I managed to not cry the morning he started (I didn’t mention the amount of tears I shed before he started though), I think when this year is over, this glorious first year, I will bawl my eye out. He is just growing up so fast!
I must say though that I have enjoyed the several hours of uninterrupted time I have each day now that all my gorgeous children are at school, and coffee with the girls is a lot easier without trying to entertain an energetic little boy. Still I do miss the ‘good old days’ we used to spend endless hours of fun together. It can be strange though when I spot something interesting when I’m out and about and my little buddy isn’t there to share it. Seriously have you ever pointed out a train and said “look a train” only to realise your child is not in the car with you, and you are talking to yourself?
We are now having 3 weeks of school holidays and I am so excited to have my children home and we have lots of fun planned, yes there will be moments where I may want to be swallowed up by the couch or run out the house screaming, but on the whole I am looking forward to time with these cool, cute, interesting little people.
What plans do you have with your kids these school holidays? Has your youngest started school yet? Love to hear your thoughts, leave me a comment below.

This is such a lovely post. My little girl doesn’t start school until next year and I’m already excited and nervous so I expect I’ll def cry! And yes I point things and then realise it’s just me…..also in public! #mummy&us
Thanks for making me feel better. Keep me posted with how your little girl goes, enjoy all those precious cuddles xx
I have all of this to come with having a 22 month old! It must be so odd when they are just not there anymore and you are right the year is flying!!! x
It was a big thing for me too. My youngest is on his second year at school and I don’t know what has happened to the time. He loves it but it took me the first year to get my head round it. Lovely post Mackenzie.
So glad it all went well. The children starting school is life changing for everyone. My daughter starts secondary this September and I can’t work out where the time has gone!
It sounds like it all went well for him at school. I’ve just become a mum and I can already feel how hard it’ll be to leave him at school on his first day in a few years!!!
