For me there is nothing quite as special as a heritage home, the beauty and history just makes me feel like I have discovered something truly unique and special. Davonport set on the Mersey River in the North-Western region of the beautiful state of Tasmania is full of beautiful period homes, one of those breathtaking homes is the Port Masters Lodgings where you can escape into the history of James Sayers (1882). This heritage accommodation was where we were lucky enough to stay on our last night in Tasmania.
Initially our attraction to the lodgings was its proximity to the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry that would take us back home to Melbourne. It is a one minute drive away from the dock! You can walk it in 3 minutes, just perfect for anyone using the Ferry to travel to and from Melbourne and Tasmania. But what truly stole my heart was the home itself, it is just simply stunning. In restoring this property the owners have taken the time to keep all the period features whilst adding in luxurious modern touches, like the wet room off the master bedroom, it truly has the wow factor!
As you pull up you are greeted by the gates which gives it the stately feel it deserves, it tells you that you have arrived somewhere special. The home is gorgeous, I mean the photographs speak for themselves.
The gardens are beautiful and frame the home perfectly. It was so lovely to arrive and just sit out and enjoy the beautiful weather.
The kids were delighted to find not only little bowls of chocolates awaiting them inside but also fresh ripe plums growing on the large fruit trees in the garden. They loved the swing set and seesaw and the array of ball games on offer.
Aspen also couldn’t believe how pretty her bed was!
The home is decorated beautifully and features like the original wood stove, the old telephone and even the light switches were something to be admired. I also loved the exposed brick in the bathroom. The art work around the home is in perfect keeping and gives the home a luxurious feel. The gorgeous beds were so comfortable and we were glad of this as we had an early morning the next day.
The fireplace in the sitting room is stunning and the kitchen was something special, it felt really homely and had everything you could want to cook up a delicious meal, it even had filtered water on tap.
Right around the corner is a grocery store, less than a minutes walk. And we took a walk down to the pier that took us only 3 minutes. There is also a gorgeous cafe right around the corner which serves delicious food in a gorgeous setting. Of course if you have more time to spend there are many wonderful places to visit in and around Davonport. My hubby was particularly happy with the great tracks that go along the water front where he could go for his morning run, they are also great for walking or riding. We enjoyed heading to the lighthouse and looking out to sea.
One of my favourite discoveries in Davonport is the Antique Emporium, it is full of amazing antiques and it is so big! I would also highly recommend visiting the Regional Gallery. There are also plenty of tours that can take you pretty much anywhere you desire.
We made the trip to Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm where we tried yummy cheeses, enjoyed coffee whilst the kids enjoyed fresh ice-cream and we learnt a lot about cows. But one of our favourite places was Anvers Chocolate Factory. We certainly enjoyed some yummy chocolates from there on our last night in Tasmania.
We really loved our time in Davonport and especially staying at the Port Masters Lodgings, it really is a place full of history, beauty and old time charm with all the modern luxuries which makes it the perfect place to stay when in Tasmania. It will be the first place we book when we head back to Tasmania, and the first place I recommend to friends to stay also.
Thank you for doing me, love Mackenzie xx
Port Masters is located in East Davonport only a few minutes walk from the Ferry Terminal for the Spirit of Tasmania.
There is a range of rooms available for booking, we enjoyed staying in the whole house, but you can book smaller rooms.
