I think I am strange. Sometimes I seriously wonder about my sanity. Is there anyone out there like me? Please tell me I am not alone in my strange little reality! Come on Mums out there tell me I am normal.

I love school holidays.

It’s true, I do, I truly do. My kids go back to school this week and it sucks. Like truly sucks. It’s not like they don’t bug me, or drive me a little crazy at times. I was crazy to start with anyway, ask my parents, they’ll agree I was always a little wacky.

But school holidays are awesome. Yes I said awesome! Why? Because there are no school runs, no after school activities, no homework to help with, no lunch boxes to prepare, no missing school shoes in the morning. And it doesn’t stop there. No early morning alarm, no grumpy kids refusing to get out of bed, no standing at the school freezing my butt off, no school traffic, no tears from my 5 year old who doesn’t want to leave me, no complaints of sore, anxious tummies. My list could totally go on.

So yes I think school holidays are awesome. I can sleep in, because yes I am one of those lucky mums whose kids sleep in, but I am punished of an evening when they can’t fall asleep, my kids are night owls like their mum, well the oldest and youngest are, April in the middle, is more like her daddy. I love that on the holidays I can get out of bed, enjoy a peaceful relaxed breakfast, and don’t have to drive the half an hour to school each morning. I love where we live, and the drive down a dirt rode passing kangaroos and rolling hills is not something I should complain about, but when I am tired in the morning (as I said I am a night owl), that drive can sometimes feel like morning torture.

I am blessed with kids who for most of the holidays get along. Along with their tendency to be night owls, the eldest Aspen and youngest Adam are two peas in a pod, which at times means an almighty clash! April has her moments, but rarely. The other two are sometimes too much alike. I am sure you can imagine a 10 year old stubborn girl in a grumpy pre-teen mood, and mix it with a grumpy 5 year old boy with too much energy and sometimes there is an explosion.

Mostly though they have fun, they really all like each other. Today they built a fort, a big fort in my living room (which is meant to be the adult room where no toys are allowed). They worked together beautifully creating this masterpiece. Its base is my kitchen chairs, and walls and roof are made from bed spreads, blankets and pillows, held on by hair ties. It is filled with couch cushions, and the pillows off MY bed for added comfort. They also have their teddy bears and other toys. To defend this fort from their mothers destructive ways they have banned together with Nerf Guns. Yes my children have turned violent, armed with their weapons full of rubber bullets and giggles, I am not getting my bedding back any time soon.

I used to be a ‘clean freak’, but I have surrendered over the years. To see my children having such fun is priceless, and it’s the kind of fun that doesn’t cost a cent, yay.

We didn’t get away these holidays, other than Aspen who went on camp (gosh it was quiet). We had lovely catch ups with family, and play dates with friends. We adopted 3 rescue kittens. Had a lovely Easter, and my daughters 8th birthday.  My little boy went to a birthday party, and we played board games, watched movies, and all ate way too much chocolate, (if you can ever eat too much chocolate). We laughed, we cried, we celebrated. It was a great couple of weeks.

So am I alone in this? Are other mums and dads as crazy as me? Do you love school holidays?

Thanks, for joining me, love Mackenzie xx
