I took my children to the dentist yesterday, they head back to school next week after almost 2 months off for summer break. So we have been to the dentist, uniform shop, hairdresser, dry cleaners ect . . Anyway, at our dentist visit I was happy to hear that the children all have healthy teeth, despite being not straight (which we are working on). It is always a relief to know we don’t have a huge dentist bill to pay, especially when you spend too much at Christmas, and having fun summer holiday outings. It also always comes as a relief when I hear Adam’s teeth are not full of cavities. Why? Well when he was aged five I wrote this post below, he is now 9, so take a read and see why I am very happy with my sons teeth . . . .
Shaken not stirred . . . . How do you take yours? How do you take yours?
“I take mine straight up! Hold the water, hold the ice!”
What am I talking about? Martini? Alcohol of any variety? No Cordial, green cordial! Let me explain . . .
So as you might know from reading previous blogs, my daughter Aspen was asked to perform a solo dance at a very special school event, so realising it was going to be a late night for my five year old son Adam, I asked his Uncle James (Bond, James Bond), if he would please mind little Adam for the evening. Adam loves his Uncle James (he’s a FUN uncle!) I told him we would be home around ten. After a magical night out, (yes Aspen’s foot held up and she performed beautifully), we arrive home and little Adam was all tucked up in his bed fast asleep, thanks Uncle James, you’re a star!
Last night we went out for dinner with the fun uncle, and he asked quite seriously why we give Adam his cordial straight up, “what?” we ask, surprised by this strange question, so he explains that after taking Adam out for Mcdonald’s, playing endless Wii U games, he asked Uncle James for a drink of cordial, when Uncle J attempts to put water in it, Adam explains that his parents don’t put water in it, oh no we apparently serve it straight up! Now you are probably ready to message me right now and call me a terrible mother, am I in love with the dentist you ask? NO! Now be honest here, if a five year old told you that’s how he drinks it, would you believe him? No of course not! But fun Uncle J, although thinking it seemed strange went ahead and poured him his cordial straight up! He assured me he only gave him a “tiny bit”.
Let me tell you something about my poor deprived children, I am one of those NOT FUN mums when it comes to food, yep it’s veggies or salad nearly every night, a lazy night for us is baked beans, not takeaway, it’s “no you can’t have a lunch order”, it’s only water to drink, yep I’m boring. My children do get the occasional treats, but mostly the rely on other family members to supply them. My son even convinces Uncle James into taking him for haircuts, because fun uncle J takes him to MACAS afterwards. And he loves when his other Uncle comes for dinner because he brings ice-cream!
After breathing into a paper bag I tell myself that all is OK, no harm was done, right? Adam and his Uncle had an awesome night, they laughed, they played, they bonded, and made lasting memories, my son is happy and safe and that’s all that matters! (I’ll just hide the cordial next time he visits!)
Thanks for joining me, love Mackenzie xx

Lol, gotta love the things children come out with. I can’t imagine that undiluted cordial is that pleasant to drink and definitely not so good for the teeth. Glad all went well with the dentist trip. #ablogginggoodtime
Would you believe that I am writing this while waiting for the numbness in my mouth to go away I had 2 fillings this morning#stayclassymama@_karendennis
I kind of love that he just believed him flat out. Hehehe. We’ve just discovered a trip to the orthadontist is required. I’m a little traumatised….financially. #Stayclassymama
Kids are so funny especially when they so blunt lol X #stayclassymama #ablogginggoodtime
Kids are so cool and funny. Then they become like mine adults and jaded. Thanks for sharing these great tales. #ablogginggoodtime
You think you’re bad with the strictness Mac? I have never let my daughters eat from any fast food chain and I don’t even know if I could let an aunt or uncle ever bring them to one either. And they have never had a fizzy drink in their little lives – it’s just water and milk in this house too so don’t feel bad! It’s simply because my rule is they eat what we eat and we don’t eat that type of food (well once in a blue moon). I would be completely hyperventilating too if that had been me, but you’re right it’s never as bad as it seems. Although I’m sure you’ll make sure he puts water in the glass in future! #ablogginggoodtime
I am also that boring Mum who makes them drink water and all that healthy stuff! Maybe Uncle J should do the cordial ‘shaken not stirred’ hehe! #ablogginggoodtime
When I was a kid and made my own drinks I would drink some of the squash without water. No idea why! #ABloggingGoodTime
Okay so at the risk of sounding VERY American here, the only cordial I have ever heard of is liqueur. So now I’m confused as to what exactly you are talking about. Is cordial something else in Australia? Is it medicine? Are we talking about medicine? Or since this is somehow related to the dentist the only thing I can think of is mouth wash. Is it mouth wash? I feel my ignorance on this may be showing 🙁 #ABloggingGoodTime
haha that is funny as I never would have thought of it being alcohol, gosh if my brother gave him that I would have gone crazy, cordial in Australia is like a sugar drink that you dilute with water, it is I guess like soft drink (or do you call soft drink soda?) Anyway like Soda only no bubbles. You poor a small amount of the sugary flavoured/coloured syrup in a glass then fill up the glass or cup with water. Hope that explains it lol
Yes, that explains it a lot. And soft drink or soda is used here in the states. We have juices that parents have to dilute for their younger children but their under the label of juice. Syrup here is only medicine or the stuff you put on your pancakes lol. It’s so interesting how we have the same things but they are classified differently in different parts of the world 🙂
Gosh you sound strict! I had a very strict mum so am not strict myself at all when it comes to food & drink – perhaps I should be stricter! #ablogginggoodtime
Undiluted squash (cordial) is quite revolting, how could he drink it?! My kids have water but are allowed squash when we eat out or they visit my mum (why do grandparents have different rules to the ones we had when we grew up???) Thanks for linking up with #stayclassymama
