When it comes to your home there is one room that should never be overlooked when it comes to making it a space that is comfortable, warm and reflects your personality, it is your living room. It is the one room in the house (other than your bedroom) where you can truly relax. But it is not easy to relax in a room that is over cluttered or just doesn’t make you feel comfortable. Your living room is a space to be cherished, a space where you can be totally yourself and it should reflect your personality. It should be somewhere you not only feel truly at home, but a space where you feel proud to invite your friends into as well.
I have written a post before about how to make a vision board. It was in relation to following your dreams and figuring out how to live a happier life, but vision boards are also a great idea for creating the kind of space you want to live in as well! Vision boards not only give you a creative space to put ideas up, but they help make dreams a reality. Have you heard of ‘the law of attraction’? Basically if you put something forward to the universe, it will find its way to you. By pinning ideas on a vision board you are sending vibes out and allowing the universe to understand what your needs are. It might all sound a little weird, but hey it’s worth a try if it works and you get the living room looking how you visioned! It is also a great visual reminder to you to do something to make it happen (or maybe a visual reminder to make your partner help you make it happen to). Other names used for vision board in design is a ‘mood board’.
Where to start.
- Getting together ideas. Pinterest is a great place to start, look up interior design boards and see what grabs your attention. You will soon start to notice that you are going for a particular look, feel or colour palate. Grab some magazines or brochures and cut out images you like and start pinning them to your vision board. head to a paint store or hardware store and look at paint colours, put together colours that make you feel good. For a living room there are no rules, but go for something that makes you feel relaxed, but happy! Remember white walls may seem boring or sterile, but they can be the perfect choice as they allow you freedom to change cushions and wall prints without having to repaint your walls down the track. This goes for choosing blinds or other window trimmings, a neutral plate can be a great base and allow for changes in taste without breaking the bank later on.
- Choose a great couch or lounge suite. Take time figuring out what sort of couch or sofa you want. This is an expensive purchase so you want it to last. Go for comfort if it is somewhere you spend loads of time, but make sure you love the style too. If you have young children or a pet that sheds a lot of hair leather may be your best choice. The issue I have with leather is if you buy cheap it won’t last, it will begin to crack very soon and it won’t be long before it is looking old. If you have it in your budget go for a great quality leather, pay that little bit more and it will last forever. My advice if you can’t afford a good leather then go for material as you can get a much better quality couch for a lot less than its leather counterpart. I actually prefer material as it doesn’t feel cold in winter and you wont stick to it in summer. If you have children it may be worth investing in fabric protector treatment, or cover the couch with an inexpensive throw rug. Have your pet learn to sit on a blanket on the couch to stop the hair getting everywhere. Also a crucial rule to buying a sofa! Sale! Sale! Sale! wait for the sales, they all go on sale, never pay full price.
- Colour Choices. Choosing a colour plate can seem daunting when you are faced with endless colour options. Like I said earlier if you find images you like start pinning them and soon you will notice a pattern forming. Still confused? I suggest going for a neutral base. paint your walls a shade of white. White walls conjure up a feeling of relaxation and refinement. Don’t go stark white though or you may feel like you are in a hospital. It is best to speak to a colour expert in store, tell them what sort of feel you are looking for and how much natural light the room gets. Take in images of your room or other furnishings. There are some amazing shades of white that can work well for a provincial look, the (very on trend) Scandinavian look, minimal looks and even a vintage look. Going for a white base or a cream base if you prefer then allows for freedom in choosing colours to add to your room to really give it a splash of your personality. This is where you can have as much fun as you want! Cushions and Art Work are great ways to add personality or a statement to your living room, choosing key piece to begin styling around is a great idea (which I will elaborate on in Part 2). Think yellows or aquas for brightness,
So there you have it, a great place to start when making your living space a more inviting space to relax, play, read or entertain in. I will be following up on this post with a series of design posts, with more tips on decorating your living rooms, and other rooms later on. So stay tuned! Part two will be out next Wednesday. Better yet subscribe to my blog and you won’t miss a post as they will arrive free into your inbox. That way you can open the ones that interest you and delete the ones that don’t. Of course I love when you read all of my posts but busy lives and all that.
On Monday I wrote a post about how I will be moving in 2 months. I asked if anyone had any design tips. I loved this advice from Shoebox of Memories
“The main approach I have is to work with the light in the room. This was a lesson learned after painting the hallway blood red and creating a gloomy bloody chamber feel rather than the warming feel we were aiming for!
The other approach has been to extend the outside inside so the living room takes on the colours of the garden outside and the attic takes on the colours of the sky.”
I also loved the comment by This Mums Life who has gone for a type of wallpaper she loves without worrying if everyone agrees with her.
“We’ve got some Edwardian style wallpaper in our lounge, which can be a divider for some people, but I love it like a third child…!”
If you are looking for some bathroom tips have a look at Mum Muddling Through’s post about creating a spa inspired bathroom in a small space.
Always go with your own style, it is after all your space!

Great tips. We have recently decorated our living room. It is a dark room so we went for a really bright yellow on one of the walls. We knew it would be ok as we had sample testers up and on the wall it looked a more warm colour but in the tin it looked very bright. So I would say always test the colour and leave it a couple of days to see how you feel about it it #bloggersclubuk
great advice!! Glad it worked out for you xx
Love the pictures you’ve shared Mackenzie, especially the yellow and turquoise throw pillows. I’ve never done any redecorating before, I honestly wouldn’t know where to begin. Great tips 🙂
oh it’s so much fun. My advice don’t overthink, just be you and have fun!
such a great post. the living room is that room in the house that you should all be able to settle down in as a family – we recently reconfigured ours to make it a much more sociable room so that all 5 of us could enjoy being in there – love all of your interior design pictures though – very inspirational #BloggersClubUK
it is great to create a space to all be together. Thanks for commenting xx
Great collection of ideas! We created a lovely living room with shelving to display my collection of ceramics, good leather sofas and my wonderful festival of Britain Sanderson curtains… Then we had kids! Fast forward 4 years, it now resembles an explosion in toys r us, and my lovely minimal shelves are filled with boxes of lego 🙁 Oh well, you try your best 😉

oh yes kids change everything, especially from age 0 to 8 and then they start to have less big toys and we start to get our space back just a little lol
Oh this is a fab post for me as we are in the process of finding a new sofa. I am really struggling to choose a colour because we don’t want to redecorate the whole room it has to fit with our current decor which is a deep brown. The problem is I don’t want a brown sofa again as I want to lighten up the space and with 2 boys (6&9) and a dog white isn’t really an option. I love the blue and silver colour scheme above but also the freshness of the yellow. Decisions, decisions…
I love the tips on colour choices and the pictures to accentuate. I need to redo out couch cushions to blend and tie the room like in the pictures! Thanks for the ideas! #bestandworst
Lovely post, I really enjoy seeing different ideas of how to decorate, I love searching for inspiration and I love some of the looks you have featured. Thanks for linking up #bestandworst
I love the yellow and turquoise cushions – such a great colour combination! I am forever grateful to the person who advised me that if I love colour I should stick to neutral walls to allow me to add colour in other ways. It’s so true, and means that you can switch things up on a regular basis without a full on decor refurb! #BloggerClubUK
The post is fantastic! I love it so much:)
Have a nice day!

Fantastic tips here, Mac. I’m bookmarking your post for future use.
This is really great stuff!! I have actually never tried a mood board when redecorating, because I have always had such a firm idea of what I want, that I didn’t stray from it! But they are fabulous if you are trying to pin yourself down on ideas, or trying to reach a compromise with a husband or partner! Our lounge is probably my favourite room in our house! It’s got the infamous wallpaper that I love, a huge, statement sofa (scotch guarded-the best money we ever spent!!!) a vintage rug and shutters, and a huge painting of Oxford, one of my favourite cities in the whole world. It definitely needs to be up there on the list of rooms that shouldn’t be neglected!
Fab post. xx

We had a lovely cosy living room which we spent a fair amount on with furniture etc before Monkey came along. Now 3.5 years later I struggle to keep it the haven it use to be with the enviable toys everywhere! I love the idea of making a vision board, we are in the throws of decorating the upstairs our room and his before our new arrival so I can see it coming in handy. Thank you for joining us at #BloggerClubUK hope to see you again next week x
