When it comes to design there is no denying the importance of getting your living room right! Sure it’s a great kitchen or luxurious bathrooms that help sell a property, but the living room is your space to relax, unwind, put your feet up with a glass of wine and a good book, and it is also the space where you welcome your guests into and entertain the people you love to have over.
When most of my guests arrive I invite them straight through to my kitchen where we usually chatter as I make them a coffee or pour some wine, but then I always suggest we sit down and relax in the living room. I don’t want to spend hours chatting over a stone bench top, or sitting on a barstool, I want to relax and I want my guests to relax too. We all have different ways we like to entertain, but this is mine.
When I was designing my living room I came up with a few different designs, naturally my first design revolved around the television. the sofa faced it, the chairs were angled towards it, and then I thought why am I doing that? I don’t want my guests to come over and stare at a TV, I want to chat with them, I want to look at them. And I want us all to feel relaxed.
So I did something that these days seems a little unusual and I decided not to put a television in my living room. Instead of designing my room around a television I designed it around my coffee table!
A coffee table is the epicentre of the living room, it is the piece of furniture where everyone revolves around, so why not make the most of your coffee table and style it to reflect your unique personality?
Click to Tweet: “Always style your home to reflect your unique personality”.
There are so many different styles of coffee tables, so how do you choose the right one?
- Easy, choose one you love!
- My advice though is to choose your sofa and chairs first, that way you will have a clear idea of how much room you have for your coffee table.
- It is also important to have your sofa first because that way you can get the height of your coffee table right. A coffee table should be around 1 to 2 inches shorter than your sofa or seating.
- The ideal distance between the sofa and coffee table is 18 inches, it’s the perfect distance to give you enough leg room, but also close enough to place your book, or drink down.
- If you have young children think about a round or oval table, it stops them hurting themselves on sharp or pointy edges.
- If you have a super gorgeous rug you want to show off, or if you room is small think about a glass top, that way it blends in more and you can see the rug. But best to avoid glass in a room with loads of large glass windows. (see below tip)
- back to kids . . . if you have young children consider a less expensive table or a distressed look table. You want to be able to live comfortably in your living room. If you are constantly telling your children off for touching things you can not relax, neither can your child or your guests.
- Consider the scale of your room and your furniture choices. You need to be able to move comfortably in the space. A great idea is to measure your room and draw it up to scale, then cut out scale pieces of furniture and see how it will work before you commit to purchases. A sofa can be a big expense so measuring how it will fit and how the coffee table will fit is a must.
- Consider using an ottoman as a coffee table. Add a tray where you can place objects and glasses.
- Consider wood if your room has a lot of windows and glass, adding a glass table to a room with large glass windows or very high ceilings can make a room feel cold. Wood adds warmth and texture to a room that feels cool.
- If you want the coffee table to be a key feature in a dull or neutral room, then consider a bright coloured table.
- On the other hand if your room screams colour and pattern then consider a coffee table that is more subdued. You don’t want every piece fighting for attention. make a few pieces pop with colour or pattern, not every piece.
Other things to consider.
Consider how you will style the coffee table, like I said, the coffee table is the epicentre of your living room and styling it should be all about you!
- Take some time to discover your taste. Window shop, look in magazines, look online, even read design articles. Take the time to figure out what appeals to you before you spend!
- If you are like me and you love books, then feel free to go book crazy on your coffee table. Or choose one very beautiful coffee table book. Find a great book store and spend time browsing their coffee table books, see what jumps out at you. Ask the staff for help if you need it.
- I am also a lover of candles and flowers and love having them on my coffee table because they make me feel at home. Think about what makes you feel at home. Candles obviously are not great with little children around, but you can always light them at night when little ones are tucked up in bed. (Unless you have bed time battles like I do lol). I like to light candles when I am home alone too, it helps relax me.
- Like above, flowers are a great choice on a coffee table. there are some gorgeous fake flowers around now, but if you can go with fresh you should, they smell amazing and look so pretty. I love adding nature to my coffee table.
- Succulents are really in vogue right now, if you don’t want to have fresh flowers, try a cute pot with a succulent in it.
- Do you have a souvenir from your travels? Add it to your coffee table it is a great conversation starter.
- If you have a beautiful vase, cup, or other ordainment that was handed down to you, perhaps from a grandparent why no put it on your coffee table? Again it will be a great conversation starter and will be a lovely reminder of people you love.
- If you have a neutral coffee table why not consider a pop of colour like a gorgeous bright serving tray!
- Need to jot things down a lot? Adding a gorgeous note pad and pen is also a great idea.
- Don’t be afraid to be unique, if you love something then add it.
- Add as much as you like, then step back and think. Remove a couple of things, play around until you get the look and feel you like!
- Still not sure, ask a friend who has a good design eye for their opinion, but remember this is your space an your home so don’t feel like you have to take their advice if you feel it is wrong for you.
- Finally never be afraid to just be YOU!

I enjoyed this, love interiors. I wish my living room was big enough for a coffee table. It’s not big enough to swing a cat in!

I made a real mistake with my living room when I first moved into this house, but I now have it designed around comfort and love it. It absolutely reflects our personalities. Your coffee table looks lovely, that mid century feel i so homely. I love your tulips too, its strange to think its the time of year in Australia for tulips. Thank you for hosting Mac, I will pop back to comment later xx
Coffee table books are our thing! We have them everywhere and just love them. We moved last October and I’m still enjoying making our home unique and ours #mg
I never really liked my living room for a while – we have a kitchen/family room which I loved but just didn’t get that homely vibe from my living room. We finally gave it some love and attention and redecorated it.
We also bought a coffee table which I love and has all my fashion/style books kept underneath it which I no longer have time to read but I love that it reflect me.
Thanks for featuring me.

I love your interior! The table, the flowers, the rug and the Molton Brown hand cream. It’s a fave brand in our Frenchie’s world too. Sorry, I am not really commenting on the topic of the post, but I can’t stop dreaming about chilling out on this gorgeous rug!#mg
Mac this is such a great idea. I hardly watch any TV these days so when I get my new house, I’m going to have a think about what layout works for us instead of following tradition. You have fabulous taste, I love your instagram account, it’s so stylish! xx
Lots of great ideas. Love your flowers and the coffee table books. I would love a coffee table with these kinds of things in my house. Maybe once my kids are older! #mg
I read this and immediately now feel like I want to go and tweek up something in my house!!! I love a good coffee table display!! My one furniture regret was selling a lovely white wooden coffee table I had salvaged from ebay when I thought it took up too much space and now I have lost that extra display surface- in its place is a large footstool- not quite the same. So good as well to not have the TV as the focus-I am sure your guests feel really relaxed and welcomed when they visit:-) XX #mg Lou
Our biggest problem and greatest joy right now is the puppy, Gatsby. He is a jumper and can scale the dining room table and kitchen counters. We cant keep a thing anywhere! Between him and the littles, we are either a cluttery mess or a sterile salon… Great post, great host! TY! #mg
Ahh this post is so lovely and timely, last week I was challenged by a brand I work with to style my coffee table and it made me really sad to realise how much of a dumping ground our coffee table is and how beautiful it ended up looking!! I love your tips and it’s really helped me to think outside the box X #mg
I can only change the things for my Bedroom as we live in a Joint Family and love to style up my Working table. I am planning to spice it up using decoupaging.
In our pre-kids living room we had a glass toppped coffee table where we stored interesting photos, gig tickets and assorted pictures.
Now it’s sadly relegated to the dining room and serves as a dumping ground for laundry!
I need to do more work around understanding my style as it’s a source of irritation that I’m content with things as they are rather than picturing what I want our living spaces to look like!

Such an interesting post, as I sit here writing I notice that all of our furniture is facing the television. Actually it seems really anti-social – I think I now have a project on my hands! Thanks for sharing and giving me something to think about.
#mg
I don’t own a coffee table. LOL! My husband and I considered one many years ago, but when we bought new furniture, we bought a sectional where almost every piece reclines, so there is no room for one now.
I fear, in my house, that a coffee table would be one more clutter magnet, so I’m glad I don’t have one. In a perfect world, however, I think I would use a few souvenirs that I’ve picked up during my travels and perhaps a photography book or two on places that I really love.
Our coffee table is currently at my parents home as it’s glass and I feared our babies may damage it or worse hurt themselves on it. We used an ottoman for a while but discovered the eldest can get into it!. Thanks for hosting #mg
Your photos are so sumptuous, I love looking at them. We’re trying to redesign our living room at the moment, so I read this with great interest. You made me think about things in a different way – thank you 🙂 Alison x #mg
Have fun!!
Your house looks beautiful. I’m jealous…mine is a huge mess!
oh believe me with 3 kids, a dog, 3 cats and 4 bunnies mine gets messy too lol
I want to come hang out in your loving room, it looks so stylish and welcoming. You have great taste!I love the idea of not centering everything around the tv, we hardly watch ours these days but I doubt I could get oli to move it! Great tips here xx #mg
it really has made such a difference. We have another room where we can all chill out and watch TV with the kids when we are feeling lazy. But it is nice having only one television in the home, it has really made us prioritise more family time.
It all looks great Mackenzie! I will take the coffee machine, the tulips and those gorgeous roses thanks.! You have certainly inspired me as we decorate our apartment at the Coast. Have a great week! #mg
haha, I’ll have to pop up and bring you some roses my lovely friend xo
Beautiful design. I had never thought of removing the television but hearing what you say, it makes perfect sense. The coffee table is indeed the epicentre and rightly should be. I have always like glass top ones but with kids, I havent’t dared explore that option. Flowers are always a nice touch. And I think the type of coffee table book you pick speaks volumes of who you are but then again I am a book junkie. Thanks for sharing with #bigpinklink
I’m the same I love books and I need them around me xo
Before we had our children, we too did not have a tv in our room which surprised a lot of people. ‘Sure what to you do so, talk to the birds?!’ em, ‘We talk to each other and our guests!’. We tried it again when we bought our house but as the children got bigger we’ve fallen back into the trap again however, screen time is limited. Nice post. #mg
I love your ideas! I especially love the ‘distressed’ look for if you have children. We didin’t startout that way, but that is the look we have now! 🙂
If I only knew you then Mac! #mg
Really great tips! I especially love the idea of using an ottoman with a tray, they’re so stylish aren’t they. We do love our big chunky oak coffee table, it certainly makes a statement but matches our other furniture in the room and it also really cosy. I’m so impressed that you haven’t centred your room around the tv. We have, I can’t deny it and we probably always will. But if we were to move and have an extra lounge space downstairs, then that would be solely for chatting and relaxing, no tv, I just love that idea!
